Four members of a family have died after a three-storey building collapsed in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday, trapping eight people under the rubble.

The incident occurred at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque, in the Popo Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area. Four other members of the family were rescued alive after emergency responders and community volunteers spent hours searching the debris.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed sadness over the tragedy and said he had visited the injured survivors in hospital. He said the state government was providing medical treatment and other support to aid their recovery.

“I am saddened by the tragic collapse of a 3-storey building in Popo Giwa area of Ilorin,” AbdulRazaq said in a Facebook post. “My heart goes out to victims of the very sad incident.”

The governor said a government delegation led by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, had visited the scene to assess the situation and sympathise with residents.

He commended the State Emergency Management Agency, State Fire Service, Ilorin West Local Government authorities and community volunteers for their efforts in rescuing those trapped.

AbdulRazaq said the incident underscored the need for strict compliance with construction safety standards. “This is another pointer to the fact that we must take safety protocols seriously in construction,” he said, pledging continued enforcement of building regulations.

Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, also expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the affected community. He called for stricter enforcement of building regulations and urged residents to report signs of structural weakness before they become emergencies.

Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, also mourned the victims and prayed for the recovery of those injured. He commended the state government and rescue teams for their prompt response to the collapse.
