Four members of the same family have died after a three-storey building collapsed in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday.

The building, located at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque in the Popo Giwa/Abemi area of Ilorin West Local Government Area, trapped eight family members beneath the rubble. Four were rescued alive, while four others died.

Emergency responders, including officials of the Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, the state fire service, local government authorities and community volunteers, worked for hours to rescue those trapped.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed sadness over the incident and said he had visited the injured survivors.

He said the state government was providing medical care and other necessary support to the survivors, while urging greater compliance with construction safety standards.

The governor also commended the emergency responders for their coordinated rescue efforts and called for stronger adherence to building regulations.

Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central, also condoled with the victims’ families and praised the rescuers. He urged property owners and developers to comply with building regulations and encouraged residents to report signs of structural weakness.

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, similarly expressed condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the survivors.

The incident has renewed concerns about construction safety and the enforcement of building standards in the state.
