The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 14 new cases of Lassa fever, bringing the country’s cumulative infections to 1,035.

According to the NCDC’s Week 33 situation report released in Abuja on Tuesday, the new cases were recorded between August 10 and 16 in Bauchi, Benue, Ondo and Edo states.

The agency reported 252 deaths from the disease, putting the case fatality rate at 24.4 per cent. This is higher than the 18.6 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

The 14 cases represent an increase from the four infections reported in epidemiological Week 32, when cases were recorded in Ondo and Edo states. At the time, cumulative infections stood at 1,021, with 240 deaths and a case fatality rate of 23.5 per cent.

The NCDC said weekly infections had continued to fluctuate, noting that Week 32 recorded a decline from the 17 confirmed cases reported in Week 31.

By Week 33, 23 states had reported at least one confirmed Lassa fever case across 117 local government areas.

The NCDC said it would continue surveillance and response activities as Lassa fever remains a significant public health concern in affected parts of the country.
