Kano Governor’s APC Defection Remains Unconfirmed

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has yet to formally confirm his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Earlier reports suggested that Governor Yusuf would register with the APC on Monday, January 12, 2026, at his Ɗiso Ward in Gwale Local Government Area. However, these reports were not corroborated at the ward level.

, Ɗiso Ward APC Chairman, Malam Maje Kabir Ahmad, said the party had not received official instructions regarding the governor’s registration. “We have not received any instruction from above concerning the governor’s coming today. Nevertheless, we are fully prepared. Even if it is late at night and the governor decides to register today, we will be ready to receive him,” he said.

Maje highlighted the political significance of Ɗiso Ward, noting that it is home to key figures, including Kano State APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, who shares both family and political ties with Governor Yusuf. “Without doubt, the governor’s return to the APC would have a significant impact on the political landscape and development of Kano State,” he added.

The APC ward office, a modest facility beside the Gwale Local Government Secretariat, is currently undergoing renovations to improve its infrastructure ahead of any official visit.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the alleged defection, Maje affirmed that the ward remains ready to welcome Governor Yusuf whenever he decides to join the party formally.

During a visit to the ward office on Sunday, Governor Yusuf was at the state house leading a graduation ceremony for 2,260 beneficiaries of the Kano State Government’s vocational skills acquisition programme. The event included the distribution of empowerment tools and materials aimed at promoting youth self-reliance and employment.

Observers noted a shift in the governor’s recent public events, with no reference to the Kwankwasiyya movement or its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the absence of the movement’s signature songs.

Political analysts say this omission has intensified speculation about the governor’s future in the NNPP and potential alignment with the APC.

For now, Kano State APC officials remain in a state of readiness, awaiting formal confirmation of Governor Yusuf’s political move.
