The Edo State Government has postponed the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo Central Senatorial District until further notice, citing the need to address urgent concerns affecting pupils’ welfare.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, assuring that a new resumption date would be communicated in due course. He urged parents, guardians and other education stakeholders in the district to take note of the directive and comply accordingly.
The postponement comes amid heightened tension in parts of the senatorial district following violent disturbances in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The crisis began on Saturday when residents staged a peaceful protest over rising insecurity, including incidents of kidnapping and the killing of a youth the previous night. Protesters blocked a major highway to draw attention to their grievances.
The demonstration later turned violent after hoodlums hijacked the protest, attacking Hausa traders at the livestock market. Several goats were killed, cows were beaten, and traders fled as panic spread across the area.
The attackers also vandalised the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, an action strongly condemned by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that one person was shot by a soldier during the unrest, adding that the incident has been referred to military authorities for investigation.
Security agencies have since moved to restore calm in the affected areas, while the state government continues to monitor the situation and assess its implications for public safety and school activities.
