The Lagos State Government has announced a month-long partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway to carry out critical rehabilitation of damaged sections.
The partial closure, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes, will run from Wednesday, February 11, to Wednesday, March 11, 2026, spanning four weeks.
The announcement, signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the project is being executed by the Federal Ministry of Works. The rehabilitation will cover the stretch from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate.
To minimize traffic disruption, the project will be implemented in two phases, using lane-by-lane repairs and traffic diversions.
Phase one will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate, lasting three weeks from February 11 to March 4. Traffic will be diverted to one half of the carriageway while repairs are carried out on the other lane, with vehicles redirected to the completed section as work progresses. Lagos-bound traffic will remain unaffected during this phase.
Phase two, scheduled from March 4 to March 11, will target the Lagos-bound carriageway between Obadeyi Bus Stop and Ekoro Junction. Traffic from Abeokuta and Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the road while construction continues on the other, with Abeokuta-bound traffic remaining uninterrupted.
The government assured motorists that proper traffic management measures will be deployed throughout the project to ensure safety and smooth movement along the corridor.
Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance, follow traffic signage, and cooperate with officials managing the diversions.
The Ministry of Transportation appealed for public patience and understanding, emphasizing that the rehabilitation is essential for long-term road safety and usability.
The project aims to restore damaged road sections while maintaining continuous traffic flow where possible, reducing inconvenience to commuters during the construction period.
