The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested three individuals in Maiduguri over the alleged mutilation of the Naira.
The suspects—identified as Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad, and Bashir Musa—were apprehended after a video circulated on social media showing them cleaning mucus from their noses using a ₦500 note.

EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed in a statement on Thursday that the video prompted investigations, leading to the tracing and arrest of the trio within the Maiduguri metropolis. The suspects are currently in the EFCC’s Maiduguri detention facility, where investigations are ongoing.
“The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC arrested Adam Muhammad, Muhammad Muhammad, and Bashir Musa following a viral video showing them cleaning their noses with a ₦500 note. They are under investigation and will be charged in court upon conclusion of the inquiry,” the statement read.
This arrest is part of the commission’s renewed enforcement against the abuse and mutilation of the Naira. In recent weeks, several individuals, including Kannywood actor Saminu Inuwa, have been investigated and arrested for similar offenses.
The EFCC says these actions are part of broader efforts to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s currency.
