The Lagos State Police Command has responded to allegations of assault made by popular content creator and influencer Papaya Ex, who claimed police officers attacked her during a stop-and-search operation.
Papaya Ex alleged that the incident occurred on Friday night while she was returning from a shoot. During a TikTok live session, she appeared with visible injuries, including a bleeding facial wound, and accused officers of hitting her with a gun, assaulting her, and beating her driver.
Although the alleged assault was not captured on video, the injuries were visible during the live broadcast.
In response, Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin provided the command’s account on social media.
He said officers conducting night patrol around 2 a.m. stopped a vehicle carrying three men and two women for a routine check. According to him, the influencer refused the search, reportedly stating that the officers could not search her vehicle and claiming recognition by senior police officials.
Hundeyin explained that the vehicle then attempted to drive away, prompting officers to follow and radio nearby patrol teams to intercept it. He said the interception occurred as the live session began.
The police spokesperson added that the matter would be handled formally by the command.
Authorities have not announced any investigation findings yet, and further updates are expected as the police review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Both parties have provided conflicting accounts, and the case remains under public scrutiny.
