Tension Rises After Fresh Bandit Attacks in Katsina

Bandits have killed one resident and abducted several others in separate attacks in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, despite a reported peace agreement between local stakeholders and armed groups before the Ramadan period.

The incidents were disclosed in a post on Friday by security analyst and crisis journalist Bakatsine via his X handle, citing accounts from residents.

According to the report, the first attack occurred around midnight in the Gangaren Mangwarori area of Kankara town. The assailants allegedly killed a resident identified as Malam Surajo and abducted an elderly woman, Gwamma.

In a separate incident around 6 a.m. on Friday, gunmen reportedly invaded the Marabar Gurbi community within the same local government area and abducted several residents.

Among those said to have been taken was the community’s second Imam (Na’ibi), Malam Jamilu Marabar Gurbi, who was reportedly on his way to the mosque for the Subhi (Fajr) prayer after Sahoor when the attackers struck.

Residents said the renewed violence has heightened tension in the area, especially given reports of a peace deal reached between community representatives and bandit groups ahead of Ramadan.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attacks, while locals have called for stronger security presence to prevent further assaults.
