The Nigerian Government has accused Jupiter Limited of attempting a smear campaign against Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of his upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom.
The allegation was made by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in a statement released on Sunday by presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare via X.
Jupiter Limited had claimed that its lithium mining project was revoked and reassigned to a Chinese company, sparking controversy and public attention.
The government dismissed the claim, stating that the revocation of Jupiter’s mineral titles followed the company’s failure to pay statutory annual service fees totaling N2.49 billion.
“Jupiter… peddled falsehoods by claiming that its titles were revoked in favour of a Chinese firm. This is a complete fabrication,” the statement said.
Officials explained that the revocation was conducted in accordance with mining sector regulations, following due notice to the company.
The government warned the public against attempts by some individuals or companies to undermine reforms in the mining industry.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria cannot and will not be intimidated or blackmailed into abandoning reforms by the antics of any individual or company,” the statement added.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining transparency and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks in all mining operations across the country.
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s mining sector as the government seeks to enforce reforms while attracting legitimate investors.
