Oyo State Police Command has thwarted a highway robbery and arrested a suspect along the Ogbomoso–Ilorin Expressway, officials said on Monday.
The incident occurred near Egbeda Village when a joint patrol of police operatives and local vigilantes encountered armed robbers who had blocked the road, according to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka.
The robbers reportedly stopped a diesel tanker driven by Surajudeen Sulaiman and dispossessed him and his assistants of their belongings.
A gunfire exchange ensued as the suspects tried to flee, resulting in the arrest of one suspect, identified as Dere Yahaya. The others escaped into nearby bushes, reportedly with gunshot injuries.
Police launched a follow-up search operation to track down the fleeing suspects and secure the area.
Femi Haruna commended the prompt response of operatives and local security partners that prevented further loss.
He also acknowledged the support of the Olatunji Rilwan Disu in strengthening policing operations nationwide.
Authorities urged the public to stay vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate with security agencies to maintain safety along major highways.
The operation underscores ongoing efforts by the Oyo State Police to curb armed robbery and enhance security on key transport routes.
