Several Nollywood actors, including Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Ayo Adesanya, and Remi Surutu, have faced public backlash after launching a pro-Bola Tinubu re-election support group amid growing economic challenges in Nigeria.
The group, named Eko 57 Movement, was unveiled in Lagos State on Sunday and is coordinated by actor Lege Miami.
Videos of the launch quickly circulated online, prompting sharp criticism from Nigerians who accused the celebrities of ignoring the country’s ongoing economic hardships.
Many social media users highlighted persistent issues such as poor healthcare, insecurity, unreliable electricity, high fuel prices, corruption, and the rising cost of living under the current administration.
An X user, @fhemiwrld, commented: “It’s just embarrassing. No light. Fuel price increased. You don’t talk about it. Shame on Y’all.” Another user, lordmayorblacksnr, added: “Make una sha no disturb us if any of una get problem and need the public sympathy. Make that Tinubu mandate come tru for una.”
Some critics emphasized the need for electoral reforms rather than celebrity-backed political movements. User titbeats said, “The only movement we need is mandatory real-time transmission of electoral results and nothing else.”
Others expressed disappointment at the celebrities for appearing disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. X user xozo10000 wrote: “Lege, what are you doing? Forgetting the masses because of your own selfish interest when you truthfully know that masses are suffering?”
Comments reflected widespread frustration with the government’s handling of public services and daily hardships. User at.michael1 added: “Nobody supports a failed government; only mediocrity does.”
The controversy highlights the sensitive intersection of celebrity influence and politics in Nigeria, particularly during periods of economic strain.
Authorities and political analysts have yet to comment on the emergence of the Eko 57 Movement or the public reaction to it.
