Ogun State Demolishes Sango Tollgate Shanties to Curb Accidents

The Ogun State Government has demolished shanties and temporary structures along the road setback at the Ogun–Lagos border near Sango Tollgate in a bid to reduce recurring traffic accidents in the area.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Kafayat Lawal, who supervised the exercise on Tuesday, said the action followed several warnings and eviction notices issued to street traders occupying the location.

Lawal explained that the affected traders had earlier been relocated to an alternative site at Plaza Road in Sango, adding that the clearance was necessary to end roadside trading that poses safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.

According to her, the presence of traders around the tollgate and under-bridge sections had contributed to repeated accidents, sometimes resulting in deaths and permanent injuries.

“The exercise will free the tollgate and under-bridge areas from street trading, which frequently leads to loss of life during traffic mishaps and has become a source of concern for the state government and well-meaning Nigerians,” she said.

She stressed that the government would not allow trading activities to continue in locations considered hazardous to public safety.

Lawal warned that anyone found returning to trade in the restricted areas would face legal consequences.

She urged traders to relocate permanently to the new market developed by the state government in collaboration with the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government and the Olota-in-Council.
