Nigerian singer Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola, popularly known as Liya, has said her decision to leave Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) was driven by the need for personal and professional growth after facing emotional and health challenges during her time with the label.
Liya, who became the first female artiste signed to the label owned by Davido in October 2020, exited the imprint in 2023.
Speaking during an interview on Wahala with Josy Anne, the singer said her experience at the label affected her wellbeing and contributed to her decision to move on.
“Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artist. It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself,” she said.
She also addressed public criticism she received during her time at the label, noting that some people wrongly perceived her as inactive despite the challenges she was facing.
According to Liya, the situation also affected her social media activity, revealing that she did not personally manage her Instagram account for more than two years, leaving it in the care of her manager.
The singer, however, expressed appreciation for her manager’s support and patience throughout the period, saying he did not pressure her despite the difficulties she experienced.
Liya gained recognition after signing with DMW and releasing songs including Melo, Adua and Lakiriboto.
