Russia Urges Trump to Ease Tensions With Iran

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russia has urged United States President Donald Trump to end hostilities with Iran and refrain from issuing further demands, warning that de-escalation is key to restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the appeal on Friday during an interview on state television, where he linked reduced tensions to the resumption of normal maritime navigation in the strategic waterway.

Lavrov referenced recent remarks by Trump suggesting that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz would return to normal once hostilities subside and key objectives are achieved.

“The day before yesterday, President Trump mentioned that as soon as we end the hostilities, and he says that almost all the goals are accomplished, then right away, the navigation in the Strait of Hormuz will go back to normalcy,” Lavrov said.

He argued that such a position indicates there is no need for additional pressure on Iran, stressing instead the importance of ending the conflict to restore stability in the region.

According to Lavrov, normal shipping operations in the Strait of Hormuz would resume in line with international maritime conventions once peace is restored, noting that existing navigation rules primarily apply during peacetime rather than active conflict.
