Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has condemned the killing of 28-year-old musician Oghenemine Ogidi by a police officer in Effurun, describing the incident as unlawful and deeply troubling.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the governor said he received news of the shooting with shock, stressing that no citizen should be subjected to extrajudicial violence.
“The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” he said.
The governor extended condolences to the victim’s family and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and upholding human dignity across Delta State.
Oborevwori also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for what he described as swift disciplinary action, including the approval for the dismissal and prosecution of officers found culpable, pending ratification by the Police Service Commission.
He assured that the state government would monitor the case closely, support the bereaved family, and ensure that justice is served.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun reportedly acted on intelligence involving the victim. Police said the officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm during the operation, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The killing has sparked public concern and renewed calls for accountability in policing practices.
