The Labour Party has congratulated Nigerian workers on International Workers’ Day, calling on authorities to intensify efforts to improve their welfare amid ongoing economic challenges.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, said Workers’ Day remains significant to the party, noting that its identity has been closely linked to labour struggles since its registration in 2003.
The party acknowledged recent government measures, including the increase in the national minimum wage, but said more action was needed to address the impact of inflation and rising living costs.
“We use this opportunity to call on those in authority to intensify efforts toward improving the welfare of Nigerian workers,” the statement said.
It added that while the administration’s steps were noted, “much more remains to be done” to ease economic pressures on workers.
The party also praised labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, for their continued role in defending workers’ rights and interests.
Reaffirming its stance, the Labour Party pledged continued support for policies that promote fair wages and align with International Labour Organisation standards.
“We assure Nigerian workers that the Labour Party stands firmly with them and will never abandon the collective struggle for good governance,” Asogwa said.
Looking ahead, the party urged workers to remain committed, expressing optimism about what it described as the eventual success of its political vision.
