Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a 30-year-old man, Muhammad Abubakar, in Kano State for allegedly transporting weapons to a destination in Katsina State.
The DSS disclosed this while parading the suspect at its Kano State Command, stating that Abubakar was apprehended in Gezawa Local Government Area following intelligence reports.
According to the agency, the suspect was intercepted while allegedly conveying four rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes, three AK-47 rifles, and two empty magazines to Funtua in Katsina State.
The DSS said preliminary investigations revealed that the weapons were collected from an individual identified as Bello in the Maigatari border area of Jigawa State for onward delivery to a security-challenged location.
Officials further stated that the suspect confessed he was promised N450,000 for successfully delivering the weapons.
Speaking to journalists, Abubakar, who identified himself as a transporter from Mokwa, Niger State, claimed it was his first involvement in such an operation. He said he was persuaded by Bello over several days to transport the weapons despite his initial reluctance.
He explained that he was arrested while travelling to deliver the items and admitted he was aware the weapons could be used for criminal activities.
The DSS said the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, adding that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with other security agencies to track and apprehend other individuals linked to the operation.
