Hafsoh Lawal: Appeal Court Affirms Death Penalty For Abdulrahman Bello

The Court of Appeal, Ilorin Judicial Division, has affirmed the death sentence by hanging imposed on Abdulrahman Bello for the murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a student of Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin.

Delivering a unanimous judgment, the appellate court led by Hon. Justice Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole dismissed Bello’s appeal in its entirety. The court held that the prosecution proved the charges of murder and unlawful possession of human parts against the appellant beyond reasonable doubt.

The panel further ruled that the trial court properly evaluated the evidence and arrived at the correct decision in convicting and sentencing the appellant.

Consequently, the Court of Appeal found no merit in the appeal and upheld both the conviction and the death sentence handed down by the lower court.

The prosecution was led by the Attorney General of Kwara State, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman, alongside Issa Zakari, Chief State Counsel, and B.L. Abdulsalam, Assistant Chief State Counsel of the Kwara State Ministry of Justice.

The judgment brings to a close a case that drew widespread public attention and calls for justice for the late Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal.
