Suspected armed herders on Thursday attacked Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State, injuring one person and looting several provision stores.
The attackers reportedly invaded the community along the Otukpo-Oweto-Abuja Road between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., firing sporadically and forcing residents, traders and customers to flee for safety.
Confirming the incident, Ohimini Local Government Chairman Gabriel Adole said the assailants, believed to be armed herders, shot one resident before breaking into shops and carting away food items and other goods.
“They came to Ankpechi community in Oglewu Ward, shooting sporadically. They shot one person, forcing residents to scamper for safety. They burgled shops in the area and carted away goods, particularly food items,” Adole said.
He noted that the attack suggested the assailants were operating close to surrounding communities, adding that residents identified them as armed herders.
According to the council chairman, the injured victim has been taken to hospital and is receiving treatment, with hopes that he will recover.
No official statement has yet been issued by security agencies on the incident, while efforts to improve security in the area are expected to continue.
