President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday urged lawmakers to prioritize legislation that addresses the needs of Nigerians as the Senate resumed plenary after a short recess.
Welcoming senators back at the Nigerian Senate, Akpabio said the chamber must remain focused on providing solutions to national challenges and fulfilling its mandate of representation.
“The Senate is not merely a theatre of debate; it is a workshop of solutions,” he said, stressing that representation should reflect a genuine commitment to the people who elected them.
Akpabio also highlighted the importance of the national budget, describing it as a key instrument for national development. He urged senators to ensure the 2026 budget reflects the priorities and aspirations of citizens across the country.
“A budget is more than figures upon paper. It is a declaration of national intention,” he said, noting that lawmakers must ensure public resources are directed toward development, stronger institutions, and improved opportunities for Nigerians.
The Senate President also called on legislators to conduct their duties with unity and patriotism despite political differences. “Let us debate with vigour but act with wisdom. Let us differ in opinion but remain united in our duty to the Republic,” he said.
He further encouraged Nigerians to actively engage with their representatives, describing democracy as a system where the people’s voices must be heard through elected officials.
Akpabio also acknowledged the ongoing religious seasons of Ramadan and Lent, urging citizens and leaders to draw lessons of discipline, sacrifice, and reflection from both observances.
He concluded by expressing hope that the spirit of the seasons would inspire lawmakers to work collectively for Nigeria’s peace, unity, and prosperity.
