The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday suspended plenary in honour of late Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South East Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly.
Mpigi died on February 19, 2026, at the age of 64 after a prolonged illness.
The decision followed a motion moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who described the move as part of the chamber’s long-standing tradition of honouring lawmakers who served the country with distinction.
Bamidele said the late senator was widely respected for his humility, accessibility, and dedication to the welfare of his constituents.
In tribute, lawmakers observed a minute of silence before adjourning plenary until March 11 to recognise Mpigi’s contributions to national development and the legislative process.
Earlier, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the lawmaker’s death as a painful loss to the chamber.
“Senator Mpigi was a patriot whose years of service in the National Assembly were marked by dedication to the welfare of his constituents and loyalty to democratic ideals,” Akpabio said.
He also extended condolences to Mpigi’s family, the government and people of Rivers State, and residents of the senator’s constituency.
Akpabio said the late lawmaker would be remembered for his calm leadership style, cooperative spirit, and commitment to public service.
