The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to a cumulative 72 years in prison over a N868.46 million fraud case.
Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to money laundering involving the diversion and concealment of public funds.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the EFCC described the conviction as a major step in its ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and deter corruption in the public sector.
According to the anti-graft agency, the offences involved laundering more than N868 million through multiple financial transactions.
The court found Nwabuoku guilty after reviewing evidence presented by the prosecution detailing how the funds were allegedly diverted and concealed.
The 72-year jail term represents the cumulative sentences handed down across several counts on which he was convicted.
Nwabuoku had briefly served as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation before he was removed from office following corruption allegations that later led to his prosecution.
