The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will proceed with its national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, despite ongoing internal disagreements within the party.
Wike said reconciliation efforts with aggrieved members would continue after the convention, stressing that internal disputes are common in large political organisations and can be resolved through dialogue. He expressed optimism that the party would rebound strongly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He also dismissed concerns over a Supreme Court appeal filed by a group led by Tanimu Turaki, saying the case would not affect the convention’s plans.
Speaking on Friday after inspecting the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, the venue for the convention, Wike said the PDP leadership remained committed to accommodating differing views within the party. According to him, discussions with dissatisfied members would continue in the overall interest of unity.
On zoning arrangements, Wike said key party positions had already been shared among regions to ensure balance, noting that the presidential ticket had been zoned to the South, while the national chairmanship was allocated to the North. He added that the consensus arrangement reflected a unified direction within the party.
He further stated that preparations for the convention were nearly complete, with seating arrangements finalised for state delegates and the VIP section ready. He said about 2,500 delegates were expected to attend the event.
The PDP national convention is scheduled to take place in Abuja on Sunday and Monday.
