Former Dino Melaye has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of not wanting the 2027 elections to take place, claiming that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is increasingly desperate.
Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday morning, Melaye said the APC views the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the only opposition capable of mounting a significant challenge.
“The APC has become so desperate. They have seen that ADC is the only opposition we have in Nigeria to challenge,” Melaye said.
He added that the influx of members from other political parties into the ADC has apparently caused panic within the APC. “I’m shocked why they are panicked. You say you have 32 governors, so why are you afraid? It is not about ADC. It is about democracy,” he said.
Melaye also alleged that President Tinubu seeks to be “coronated” rather than elected, describing the approach as a “Kabiyesi mentality,” a reference to monarchical-style rule.
His remarks come shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the ADC.
INEC further stated that it will not recognize factions within the party or monitor any conventions or congresses organized by groups aligned with the affected leaders.
The move has intensified discussions about the role of electoral bodies in regulating internal party disputes and ensuring fair competition ahead of the next general election.
Melaye’s comments underscore growing political tensions between the ruling APC and opposition parties as Nigeria approaches the 2027 polls.
Observers note that such disputes could influence voter confidence and the perceived credibility of the electoral process if not resolved transparently.
