The Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has described the killing of Oseni Braimah as a “national alarm bell,” warning that Nigeria’s security architecture has become increasingly fragile.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that Brigadier General Braimah, commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh, was killed alongside other personnel during an attack by terrorists on a military formation in Kaga Local Government Area.
Speaking at a state-of-the-nation press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, CHRICED Executive Director Ibrahim Zikirullahi said the incident highlights the depth of the country’s security crisis.
He described the killing as more than a routine battlefield loss, calling it a symbolic rupture that exposed weaknesses in Nigeria’s defence structure.
“When a senior military officer, operating within what should be a fortified command environment, is overrun and killed by insurgents, it sends a chilling message about the state of national security,” Zikirullahi said.
He warned that the development reflects deeper systemic failures within the country’s security framework, including intelligence gaps, inadequate fortification of military positions and operational planning challenges.
According to him, the attack also signals declining troop morale and demonstrates the increasing boldness of insurgent groups capable of targeting high-ranking officers.
“The question, therefore, is: if a brigadier can be ambushed and killed, what hope remains for ordinary citizens?” he asked.
Zikirullahi further said the incident reinforces public anxiety and highlights the need for urgent reforms in leadership, intelligence coordination, equipment provision and political commitment to addressing insecurity.
He called for sweeping reforms across the nation’s security architecture and urged journalists to strengthen investigative reporting on insecurity, corruption and governance failures.
The CHRICED director also encouraged citizens to remain actively engaged in democratic processes and to demand accountability from elected officials through lawful and peaceful means.
