Abiodun Claims Role in Daniel’s Rise, Signals 2027 Senate Bid

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has said he played a decisive role in the political successes of former governor, Gbenga Daniel, including his 2003 gubernatorial victory and emergence as senator for Ogun East in 2023.

Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders’ meeting held at his Iperu-Remo residence on Tuesday night, Abiodun stated that he supported Daniel’s rise despite initially contesting against him for the governorship ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2003.

According to the governor, he not only congratulated Daniel after the primaries but also handed over his political structure to ensure his victory in the general election.

Abiodun further disclosed that he intervened in the 2023 senatorial race, persuading key contenders, including former deputy governor Segun Adesegun and ex-senator Lekan Mustapha, to step down for Daniel to secure the party’s ticket under the All Progressives Congress.

The governor, however, expressed disappointment, alleging that Daniel had responded to his support with negative publicity and media attacks. He said he would leave the matter “to his conscience.”

The remarks come amid growing political tension in Ogun East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 elections. Abiodun confirmed at the meeting that he intends to contest for the Ogun East Senate seat.

His declaration follows reports that APC leaders had recently adopted him as a consensus candidate during a caucus meeting in Ijebu-Ode.

Despite this, Daniel has reportedly obtained the party’s nomination form, indicating his intention to seek re-election to the Senate.

Addressing party stakeholders, Abiodun promised to deliver strong and active representation if elected, pledging not to be a passive member of the National Assembly but to serve effectively in the interest of Ogun East.
