Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister, Labour Leader

United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, citing the need to put the country’s interests first amid growing political pressure.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, Starmer said every decision he made while in office was guided by what he believed was best for the United Kingdom.

“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.

Starmer confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and directed the party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader. Nominations are expected to open on July 9, with a successor to be chosen before Parliament returns in September.

He said he would remain in office temporarily to ensure a smooth transition of power.

The resignation comes after weeks of mounting pressure within the Labour Party, following poor election performances and growing calls from party members and lawmakers for a change in leadership. A recent by-election victory by political rival Andy Burnham further intensified speculation about Starmer’s future.

Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide general election victory in 2024, leaves office less than two years into his premiership. His departure triggers a leadership contest that is expected to shape the party’s direction ahead of the next general election.
