Officials of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) have discovered about 100 bags of human faeces at a property on Ibadan Street, Aba.
The discovery was made on Tuesday by officials of the agency’s Aba Zone during an inspection of the premises.
According to ASEPA, the bags of faeces were stored within the compound of the public house, while four basins containing human excreta were also found in the building’s corridor.
The agency said a sewage tank was discovered in one of the downstairs rooms, directly beneath a bed used by occupants of the house.
ASEPA described the situation as a serious public health and environmental concern, warning that the improper storage of human waste could create conditions for the spread of disease and trigger an epidemic.
Following the discovery, the agency sealed the premises on August 18, 2026, pursuant to a court order, pending investigation and the implementation of required corrective measures.
ASEPA said the building would remain sealed until its owners or occupants meet the necessary environmental and public health requirements.
The reason for storing the faeces had not been established as of the time of the report. However, some residents who commented on the agency’s social media page alleged that the waste was being sold to farmers as manure for about N10,000 per bag.
The agency has not confirmed the allegation, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery are ongoing.
