The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin,

Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has pledged the institution’s support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s efforts to maintain a drug-free campus.

Egbewole gave the assurance on September 1, 2026, when he received the Deputy State Commander of the NDLEA Kwara State Command, DCN Kennet Odili, who led an advocacy team to the university.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the agency for its efforts to curb drug abuse, noting that the university already had policies, structures and drug-testing procedures in place to protect students from substance abuse.

He said further engagement was needed to determine how the NDLEA’s Drug Integrity Test could complement the university’s existing system. Egbewole also urged the agency to ensure that its drug-testing policies were implemented in line with constitutional provisions protecting individual privacy.

The Vice-Chancellor further called for increased attention to the abuse of prescribed medications and stronger collaboration between the NDLEA, medical professionals and pharmaceutical stakeholders to promote responsible prescription and drug use.

Earlier, Odili urged the university to adopt the Drug Integrity Test as part of its drug prevention measures. He described the initiative as evidence-based, preventive and non-punitive, aimed at identifying early drug use and providing timely counselling, intervention and rehabilitation.

He also encouraged the establishment of War Against Drug Abuse clubs, functional counselling centres and other student support structures.

According to Odili, the NDLEA is prepared to support the university with approved testing kits, personnel training and technical assistance to promote a safer and drug-free academic environment.
