Friendship finds a special expression when it brings together individuals distinguished by knowledge, professional accomplishment and service to society. Such is the bond between Emeritus Professor Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Kuliyan Sokoto, and Professor Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, Kuliyan Ilorin.
Their companionship presents a refreshing picture of two accomplished men whose public responsibilities leave room for warmth, humour and the simple pleasure of good company. Beyond their titles and achievements is a friendship that celebrates the human qualities through which meaningful relationships endure.
Emeritus Professor Oloyede is a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence and an experienced educational administrator. He served as the eighth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin from 2007 to 2012 and subsequently as Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. His career has combined scholarship, institutional leadership and public service, alongside his work as Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
Professor Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, is a distinguished legal practitioner, author and philanthropist. A graduate of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in law, he attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1997. He founded Yusuf O. Ali & Co., Ghalib Chambers, in 1994. His contributions also encompass legal scholarship and charitable service through the Yusuf Olaolu Ali Foundation, established in 2009.
Their respective journeys reflect the meeting of scholarship and advocacy—two callings anchored in disciplined reasoning, sound judgment and the responsible use of knowledge. Their friendship offers a fitting setting in which these shared values find personal expression.
An especially significant dimension of their relationship lies in the royal institutions that honoured them. The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Emir of Ilorin, His Royal Highness Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, who bestowed their prestigious traditional titles, are themselves strong companions and royal brothers, united by faith, heritage and mutual respect.
There is a pleasing symmetry in this connection: two friends honoured by two royal fathers whose own relationship embodies enduring brotherhood.
The titles of Kuliyan Sokoto and Kuliyan Ilorin connect their bearers to emirates with rich traditions of Islamic learning, cultural leadership and communal responsibility. These honours bring an additional layer of meaning to lives already distinguished by academic and professional service.
The companionship between Oloyede and Ali can therefore be appreciated within the wider fellowship linking Sokoto and Ilorin. It echoes, in a personal and affectionate way, the goodwill between the royal fathers who recognised them.
Yet, the appeal of their friendship rests equally in its simplicity. Titles command recognition, but companionship grows through mutual regard, understanding and the willingness to share life beyond formal obligations. Their bond reminds us that distinction need not diminish approachability, and that serious responsibilities can coexist with good humour.
For younger generations, their example offers a valuable lesson: pursue excellence, honour meaningful relationships and make room for others along the journey. Achievement becomes richer when it is accompanied by generosity of spirit.
In celebrating Emeritus Professor Is’haq Oloyede and Professor Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN, we celebrate two distinguished lives and the friendship that connects them. We also recognise the royal brotherhood that gives their traditional honours a shared cultural resonance.
Bound by friendship and honoured by royalty, the two Kuliya offer a fitting portrait of fellowship across Sokoto and Ilorin.
