NPA Urges Northern Unity, Warns on Democratic Decline

The Northern Progressive Agenda (NPA) has called for greater unity and collaboration across Northern Nigeria, warning that weakening democratic institutions and a shrinking political space could undermine governance and long-term stability.

In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Idris Ibrahim Kalgo, the group expressed concern over what it described as the erosion of credible opposition and declining confidence in the country’s democratic framework.

“The North has always played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s political and moral direction. Today, that responsibility calls for renewed clarity of purpose and unity of action,” the statement said.

The NPA urged political leaders, regardless of party affiliation, to set aside differences and work together in the region’s interest. It also called on stakeholders within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other parties to adopt a unified and disciplined approach capable of restoring public trust.

The group emphasized the need for broader participation in governance, encouraging youth, women, and civil society organisations to take an active role in the democratic process.

It further called on public institutions to uphold the rule of law, fairness, and constitutional principles in order to strengthen democratic governance.

Kalgo described the current period as a “generational responsibility,” stressing the urgency of collective action to address pressing challenges.

He added that the NPA remains committed to engaging policymakers, thought leaders, and emerging voices in developing practical solutions to issues such as insecurity, governance deficits, and economic development.

The group said its vision is to build a Northern Nigeria that is united, secure, and prosperous, urging stakeholders to act decisively in pursuit of that goal.
