Suspected armed bandits on Tuesday night attacked Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two residents and injuring several others in a late-night assault that lasted about 30 minutes.
Residents said the gunmen stormed the village at about 10:30 p.m., opening sporadic fire after most people had gone to bed. The attackers reportedly fled into nearby bushes and rocky terrain before security operatives arrived.
A resident, Dusu Bulus, described the incident as unprovoked, noting there had been no earlier confrontation that could have triggered a reprisal attack.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the attack, saying the community was thrown into panic by the sudden gunfire.
“Gunmen stormed Rim Village around 10 p.m. on Tuesday night and opened fire sporadically. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed, while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Tengwong said.
He described the incident as part of a recurring pattern of insecurity affecting Riyom and neighbouring communities and called on security agencies to intensify patrols and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, and the media representative of Operation Enduring Peace were unsuccessful, as calls and text messages were not returned at the time of filing this report.
