Tinubu Faces Backlash Over Plateau Condolence Visit

Some residents of Plateau State have criticised president Bola Ahmed Tinubu following his visit to the state to sympathise with victims of the recent Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, where more than 30 people were killed and several others injured.

The President visited the state on Thursday in the aftermath of the violence but addressed stakeholders at Yakubu Gowon Airport instead of travelling to the affected community or visiting victims receiving treatment in hospitals.

His decision drew criticism from some residents, who said the visit did not meet expectations for a show of empathy following the killings.

Several residents expressed their concerns on social media, questioning why the President addressed people at the airport rather than visiting survivors or bereaved families in the affected area.

One resident, Kacholom Luka, wrote that the President should have visited injured victims in hospital instead of addressing officials at the airport.

Bright Gyang, Joel Poret and Others, described the visit as disappointing and insensitive, arguing that direct engagement with victims would have better demonstrated solidarity with affected communities.

Some commenters also referenced previous presidential visits to violence-hit areas in other states, saying they expected a different approach in Plateau given the scale of the attack.

The Presidency has not issued a response to the criticisms, but the visit formed part of federal government efforts to commiserate with victims and assess the security situation following the killings in Jos North Local Government Area.
