The Kwara State chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) has announced plans to commence an indefinite strike on July 2, 2026, over poor remuneration, unpaid allowances, and what it described as discriminatory welfare practices affecting magistrates in the state.
The decision was reached during an emergency congress held on Wednesday, where members expressed dissatisfaction over what they termed years of neglect and unresolved welfare concerns.
In a communiqué signed by the association’s chairman, magistrates called for an immediate salary review, payment of outstanding allowances, and equitable distribution of official vehicles among judicial officers.
The association stated that a Grade Level 14 magistrate currently earns less than a Grade Level 14 court registrar, describing the disparity as unfair and demoralising. It also noted that furniture allowances, which should be paid every four years, have not been received since the administration of former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Magistrates further complained about unpaid allowances and alleged inequalities in the allocation of official vehicles, claiming that while some officers were provided with vehicles, others received none.
According to the communiqué, members initially proposed commencing a strike within 48 hours. However, the Chief Judge of Kwara State advised that any industrial action must follow due process and be preceded by a minimum seven-day notice.
“Today, we held a crucial Congress where the voice of the Magistrates was heard, loud, clear, and resolute. There was palpable frustration and righteous anger over the challenges we face,” the association said.
The leadership of MAN said it had continued discussions with relevant authorities but noted that members had reached a breaking point after years of unresolved grievances.
The association urged magistrates to remain united while efforts to resolve the dispute continue, warning that court proceedings across magistrates’ courts in Kwara State could be disrupted if the issues remain unresolved before the notice period expires.
“Let it be known: This strike shall commence on Thursday, the 2nd day of July, 2026,” the communiqué stated.
