Kwara State’s youngest female legislator, Hon. Rukayat Shittu, has sponsored the State Electric Power Sector Bill, 2025, which has successfully passed its first and second readings in the House of Assembly.
The bill aims to repeal the Electricity Board Laws of 1992 and 2006, establish a state-level electricity market, and domesticize the federal Electricity Act of 2023, granting Kwara greater autonomy over its energy sector.
Shittu said the legislation would expand electricity access, attract private investment, and create opportunities in jobs, health, and education, particularly for rural communities.
The Stakeholders at the public hearing praised the bill for addressing chronic power shortages and enabling independent power projects, mini-grids, and renewable energy initiatives.
