As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general election, major political parties have outlined expectations for the next INEC chairman, stressing credibility, neutrality, and adherence to democratic principles.
The current INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, is set to complete his tenure by November, the ruling APC called for a level playing field for all parties, while the PDP emphasized appointing a leader of unquestionable integrity, independence, and commitment to free and fair elections.
The ADC also warned that failure to ensure credible elections could threaten the country’s democratic stability.
However President Bola Tinubu has reportedly shortlisted candidates to succeed Yakubu, in line with constitutional requirements that appointees be at least 50 years old and of unquestionable character.
