Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticized the National Assembly, describing it as unfit to legislate following the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026.
Speaking in an interview with AIT, Adeyanju said the Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has acted against the interests of Nigerians and questioned its role in governance.
His comments came after President Bola Tinubu signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law on Wednesday.
Adeyanju argued that the amendments have taken the country backward in electoral transparency, claiming the reforms resemble a return to outdated practices where election results could be manipulated.
He described the legislature in harsh terms, accusing it of failing to uphold democratic principles and calling for a rethink of how politicians operate.
According to him, politics should not be a profession but a civic duty performed by professionals voluntarily. He suggested that public office holders should not be paid salaries but serve on a rotational basis.
Adeyanju also criticized the level of expenditure on lawmakers, arguing that public funds would be better invested in strengthening the judiciary and other institutions.
He called for broader reforms, insisting that accountability and integrity must guide electoral laws and legislative decisions.
The National Assembly has not publicly responded to the allegations or comments made by the activist lawyer.
