Osimhen Names Bassey, Romero Toughest Opponents

Victor Osimhen has identified fellow Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey and Cristian Romero as two of the toughest defenders he has faced in his career.

The Super Eagles striker praised both players for their physicality, aggression and defensive awareness while reflecting on difficult matchups during a recent interview monitored by PUNCH Online.

Speaking about Bassey, Osimhen said the defender’s strength and pace make him difficult to overcome, especially because they are familiar with each other’s playing styles from the Nigerian national team.

“Calvin is very strong, very fast, and difficult to beat in one-on-one situations,” Osimhen said.

“He understands my style because we play together for Nigeria, so it is always a tough battle whenever we face each other,” he added.

Osimhen also described Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur as an aggressive and highly focused defender who gives attackers little time on the ball.

“Romero is another really tough defender. He is aggressive, always focused, and doesn’t give strikers time on the ball,” the striker said.

Osimhen has faced several top defenders during his club career in France and Italy, as well as in European competitions, where he has established himself among Europe’s leading forwards.

His remarks come amid another strong season in Europe, with the Nigerian striker continuing to attract transfer interest from major clubs following his consistent goal-scoring performances.

Meanwhile, Calvin Bassey has continued to impress for club and country with his versatility in defence, while Cristian Romero remains a key player for both Tottenham Hotspur and the Argentina national football team.
